A holistic way to improving your health.

Let me show you how Chiropractic can help you:

The History of Chiropractic

The practice of chiropractic commenced more than a century ago when David D. Palmer established that a single manipulation brought back the hearing of Harvey Lillard. Seventeen years prior to Lillard meeting Palmer he had lost his hearing. Palmer revealed his deafness had begun after a joint in Lillard’s back had “given-away” whilst stooping. Palmer reasoned that restoring the bone’s alignment would return Lillard’s hearing, which it did after Palmers first adjustment (Leach, 2004).

Palmer theorised that decreased nerve flow may be the cause of disease, and that misplaced spinal vertebrae may cause pressure on the nerves. He reasoned, if the spinal column were correctly positioned, the body would be healthy (Bousquet, 2004). Palmer had developed the skill of manipulation and established chiropractic, naming the treatment adjustment, by September 1895 (Leach, 2004).

Chiropractic at Present

Much has changed since Chiropractic's inception by David Palmer. Modern Chiropractors now complete a 3 year undergraduate degree in Chiropractic Science, which includes study areas such as human anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, physics, radiographic physics, diagnostics imaging, neuromusculoskeletal diagnosis, pathology, biology, histology, and medical microbiology to name just a few. A 2 year masters in chiropractic clinical practice completes an extensive 5 year course and enables us to effectively treat a wide range of conditions and ailments.

It has been approximated that 80% of the population will suffer from lower back pain (LBP) at some stage of their life, and in 10% of these circumstances the LBP will become chronic in disposition and instigate considerable morbidity for the person (Smith, 2007).

A Chiropractic Future

Chiropractors use manual therapies to relieve musculoskeletal complaints and help them from recuring. Such manual therapies include but are not limited to: mobilisations, adjustments, soft tissue massage, active release, trigger point release, post isometric relaxation technique, flexion distraction technique, terminal point technique (TPT or drop-piece), stretching, strengthening, neural flossing, and rehabilitative exercises.
